Thinking of hiring someone for your next project?
Here are some helpful tips to consider before making a decision.
- Check to make sure the contractor is properly licensed with the state. State statutes require builders and remodelers to be properly licensed as well as their salespeople. You can also find out if there are any formal complaints against a particular license holder. For more
information contact www.cis.state.mi.us
- Make sure the contractor carries workman's compensation and general liability insurance. Request a current copy of these as weIl as a current copy of their license.
- References are always good to get, however, it's always good to
contact your local building department and inquire about the company
you may be hiring.
- Ask around - neighbors, friends, church, work associates, a referral
from people in the community is really the best.
- Check with the Better Business Bureau
- Make sure contracts are clear; they should be detailed enough so that you understand completely what you're getting for your money and what you're not getting. Never sign blank forms or proposals.
